Christian
Tell was born in 1957 in Hyères (France). Already at a very
young age, he showed a keen interest in nature and aesthetics, and
began drawing. He held his first exhibition in Paris when he was
15. Due to family pressure, he was obliged to enter a technical
school and learn a trade, far away from his artistic aspirations.
This could have discouraged him from painting; on the contrary,
his will to express his feelings through his art was so deep that
he would get up at dawn to paint; he still does so today. After
several years of figurative painting, influenced by great painters
of the Renaissance, Christian Tell moved away from the linear perspective
he inherited from them, to turn towards non figurative art.
He qualifies his works as non-figurative, as opposed to purely abstract
art, where by definition, the subjects represented would be “a
mere lifeless artistic expression”; that is not the case with
Christian Tell. On the contrary, his pictorial search has only one
single objective: sharing with us his emotions regarding the natural
elements which form our daily environment.
His painting, strongly inspired by much travel throughout the world,
is dreamlike while keeping a structured balance. The characteristic
features of his works lie in their rigorous construction, thus providing
a relaxing harmony in a world of instability. It was under the influence
of great masters, such as Zao Wou-Ki, Soulages and Poliakoff, that
the talent of Christian Tell truly came to light.
Since 2000, Christian Tell has frequently exhibited in France and
throughout Europe; in order to share with us his vision of simple
things which we would otherwise not notice, and, to let our imagination
wander through his non figurative paintings.
Christian Tell has become a master of matter and transparency.
